Widespread native willow. Forms a multi-stemmed shrub 10′-20′ tall. Large, rounded leaves are dark green with silvery undersides. The plant seems to glisten as the wind catches the leaves. Catkins are showy in late winter, good pollinator food. Host plant of many butterfly species. Tolerant of wet and heavy soil, good streambank plant, and yet worthy of a spot in the garden (just don’t plant it over your water line).
