Growers’ Field Day

What will it take to build an organic fruit market west of the Cascades, and what’s on the horizon for organic management across orchards and vineyards? Cloud Mountain Farm Center will host regional experts, farmers, processors, and more for a FREE field day exploring a variety of topics pertaining to orchard/vineyard management. The day will feature a panel of grower/producer experts, several speakers, and a demonstration from Whatcom Conservation District and Kulshan Carbon Trust on using orchard biomass to produce and utilize biochar as a carbon sequestration and fertility tool.

Whether you’re thinking about your first acre or expanding existing ground, join local orchardists and researchers for tours, talks & conversation. Light refreshments, coffee, and tea will be served. Spanish translation will be available. Register now for this FREE event.

Presenters & Panelists

Amanda Knauf is the Wildfire Resilience Specialist for Whatcom and Skagit Conservation Districts. She works with local property owners and communities to evaluate and mitigate wildfire risk. Amanda has a background in forest restoration, invasive species management, and fire ecology. She hopes to be a resource in fire preparedness for the community.

In 2021 Stephanie Barmann and Jesse Nickerson purchased their farm with an existing vineyard and mature fruit tree orchard.  In 2022 they were licensed to produce wine & cider.  Stephanie has a background in neuroscience and medical device sales, and now is running the daily operations at Barmann Cellars.  Jesse is currently an actuary in the Property & Casualty space, and enjoys overseeing the books, the back end of the business and helping on the farm! 

Carrie Brausiek is an agroforester and Co-founder of Agroforestry Northwest. She leads AFNW to advance agroforestry throughout the Puget Sound and beyond and sees agroforestry as a solution to competing land use issues, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and farmland resilience. Carrie’s focus includes working with agroecological systems and agroforestry focuses to include multifunctional riparian forest buffers, food forests, and alley cropping. 

Corina Cheever is the Conservation Planning Manager for the Whatcom Conservation District, where she assists landowners by providing technical assistance on mud and manure management, farm plans and answering other resource management questions. Corina has worked at Whatcom CD since 2011 and graduated from Western Washington University with a BS in Geology.

Ezra Ranz along with his sister and their families is a co-owner and certified Organic Farmer at Bow Hill Blueberries in Northwest Skagit County where he oversees the fertilization, weed cultivation, harvest and preservation of eight acres of heirloom blueberries.  Bow Hill Blueberries unique and award-winning Organic Juice, Confiture, and Marinade are a perennial celebration of the fleeting Summer harvest. His curiosities include bumblebees, scything, and bicycles. 

Griffin Berger is the Operations Manager at Sauk Farm in Skagit County. Raised in the Skagit Valley, Griffin received his Bachelors in Integrated Plant Sciences from WSU. With over 12 years of farming/internship farming experience, Griffin is constantly striving to improve growing practices, quality and nutrition of crops, and overall sustainability.

Maia Binhammer is the Fruit Program Manager at Cloud Mountain Farm Center. Maia co-manages the orchard/vineyard operations at Cloud Mountain. She cut her teeth vegetable farming in Pennsylvania before moving West and joining the team at Cloud Mountain in 2020.

Steve Hollenhorst is co-founder & vice president of Kulshan Carbon Trust, an environmental scholar and former dean in the Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University. He is currently the Associate Vice-President for Facilities at WWU. He is the founder of the West Virginia Land Trust and the McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS). His scholarship focuses on protected area policy and management, land trusts and conservation easements, and environmental resource management.

El Cloud Mountain Farm Center reunirá a expertos regionales, agricultores, procesadores y otros participantes en una jornada GRATUITA para explorar diversos temas relacionados con el manejo de huertos y viñedos. Contaremos con un panel de productores expertos, varios oradores, y una demostración del Distrito de Conservación de Whatcom y el Kulshan Carbon Trust acerca del uso de la biomasa de huerto para producir biochar (también llamado biocarbón), una herramienta para el secuestro de carbono y la fertilidad del suelo. 

Ya sea que solo tenga un acre o que esté buscando ampliar su terreno y su producción agrícola, le invitamos a unirse a productores e investigadores locales en visitas guiadas, charlas y conversaciones. Amanda Knauf se especialisa en incendios forestales y como incrementar la resiliencia ante estos, en los Distritos de Conservación de Whatcom y Skagit. Trabaja con propietarios y comunidades locales para evaluar y mitigar el riesgo de incendios forestales. Amanda tiene experiencia en restauración forestal, gestión de especies invasoras y ecología del fuego. Amanda busca ayudar a su comunidad a prepararse contra futuros incendios forestales. 

En 2021 Stephanie Barmann y Jesse Nickerson compraron una granja con un viñedo y un huerto de árboles frutales maduros. En 2022 obtuvieron la licencia para producir vino y sidra. Stephanie tiene experiencia en neurociencia y venta de dispositivos médicos, y ahora dirige las operaciones diarias de Barmann Cellars. 

Jesse trabaja evaluando riesgos para ofrecer pólizas de seguro al público, y disfruta de supervisar la parte financiera de la empresa y ayudar en la granja. 

Carrie Brausiek es agrosilvicultora y cofundadora de Agroforestry Northwest. A través de AFNW busca impulsar la agroforestería en todo el Puget Sound (y más allá) y considera que la agroforestería puede ayudar en problemas de usos y ocupación de la tierra, la adaptación al cambio climático y la mitigación, y la resiliencia de las tierras agrícolas. El jugo, la confitura y la marinada orgánicos de Bow Hill Blueberries, únicos y galardonados, permiten al público disfrutar de la fugaz cosecha de verano por un tiempo prolongado. Sus intereses incluyen: los abejorros, cortar el césped con guadaña y las bicicletas. 

Griffin Berger es el director de operaciones de Sauk Farm en el condado de Skagit. Creció en el valle de Skagit y obtuvo su licenciatura en Ciencias Vegetales Integradas en WSU. Con más de 12 años de experiencia en agricultura y prácticas agrícolas, Griffin se esfuerza constantemente por mejorar sus prácticas de cultivo, la calidad y la nutrición de sus cultivos y la sostenibilidad en general. 

Maia Binhammer es la directora del programa de frutas del Cloud Mountain Farm Center. Maia codirige las operaciones de huerto/viñedo en Cloud Mountain. Se inició en el cultivo de hortalizas en Pensilvania antes de trasladarse al oeste y unirse al equipo de Cloud Mountain en 2020. 

Steve Hollenhorst es cofundador y vicepresidente de Kulshan Carbon Trust, académico en ciencias ambientales y antiguo decano de la Facultad de Medio Ambiente Huxley de la Western Washington University (WWU). Actualmente es vicepresidente asociado de instalaciones en WWU. Es fundador del West Virginia Land Trust y de la McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS). Sus estudios se centran en la política y gestión de áreas protegidas, fideicomisos de tierras y servidumbres de conservación, y gestión de recursos medioambientales.
